Follow the Shallow Ford wine trail

shallow ford wine trail

The Shallow Ford is, as its name implies, a shallow section of the Yadkin River which afforded a safe place for travelers to cross. Since the Shallow Ford was the only place to safely cross the Yadkin River for miles around it became the hub of a spoke system of roads on both sides of the river. West Bend Vineyard is very close to the location of the colonial road known as “The Great Wagon Road”. It stretched from Philadelphia through the Carolinas to Georgia. The road traveled just north of Misty Creek Vineyard on its way to Salisbury. The Great Wagon Road was used by both forces during The Revolutionary and Civil Wars. During both wars, battles were fought at the Shallow Ford because of its strategic importance. Other roads that spurred off of the Shallow Ford traveled by or close to the other vineyards on the trail. Many historic landmarks and places of interest dot the trail.
